Project: The Mediterranean , crossroads of tastes and traditions

Last week, at Liceo Aristosseno, the first of a series of meetings of the Erasmus plus KA 229 Project was held : “The Mediterranean, crossroads of tastes and traditions ”, entirely financed by the European Union for the term of two years- 2018/2019.
Working meetings
Working meetings , which took place from 22nd to 27th October, were attended by the delegations of students and teachers of the schools involved in the same Partnership in Spain (Istituto IES LA ROSALEDA in MALAGA), Greece (PIERAMATIKO SCHOLIO PANEPISTIMIOU in Athens ) and Turkey (GARIP-ZEYCAN YILDRIM LISESI in SAMSUN) , which , together with Liceo Aristosseno , the leading school of this cultural enterprise , have started important research and promotion work to get knowledge of the crops and cultures of the Mediterranean lands.
In particular, the schools will be engaged in a study of scientific and historical-cultural tabulation of the native “ cultivars “of the Mediterranean area: they will look into the types of their cultivation, their products ( also in cosmetics ), their consumption, paying great attention to food, and their use in the millennial habits and traditions of its territories.
The project
project has recourse to a permanent team of teachers of scientific and humanistic disciplines, including Italian and mother-tongue teachers of English and Spanish, widely tested and engaged in theoretical and techno-practical activities of territorial knowledge and enhancement , with regard also to defending the biodiversity of the countries involved in the activities.
In this way, the Project aims at consolidating, in the Mediterranean area, a winning cultural model, strongly rooted in the landscape, environment, agriculture, food and wine, and art to promote a “ second reading “, done with awareness and participation, of the historical and cultural roots of its territories and encourage the creativity that moves thinking and the works of the globalised present in its winning aspects.
“This Erasmus plus project was promoted and strongly supported by Liceo Aristosseno– declared the Headmaster, Mr Salvatore Marzo- as an innovative means of training, capable of valuing , through the passionate and competent commitment of students, teachers and administrative staff – our Mediterranean,the cradle of millennial civilizations”.

Workshop
Tuesday 23rd October was the first day of the five-day workshop at the Liceo Aristosseno entitled: “In search of the four Bs: Benevnuti (Welcome)- Biodivesity- Buoni sapori (Good tastes)- Ben-essere (Well-being)” involving three foreign delegations from Greece, Turkey and Spain. It is the first of four meetings in the project ERASMUSPLUS Action KA229 entitled: The Mediterranean: crossroads of tastes and traditions” Code 2018-1-IT02-KA229-048179_1, entirely financed by European funds.
The two-year project foresees another three trips: to Athens (Greece) in March 2019, to Samsun (Turkey) in September of the same year and to Malaga (Spain) in April 2020. In the meantime, the principle town of the Ionian is the first to be visited and explored for its environment, countryside and cultural history, widening the field of research into the areas around the Mar Piccolo (Small sea), to the Pianelle park and as far as the natural reserve of the Metaponto Park.
The project
The project has the integrating background of the human history of the main Countries of the Mediterranean with regard to the history and knowledge of food which is often shared on an anthropological and cultural level: tasting is in fact knowledge of the people and traditions because it implies knowledge of humanistic, scientific and technological subjects as well as experiencing the material practices which derive from it.
The guest delegations, made up of six students and two teachers from each country, will work side by side a large group of students from the fourth year of the Liceo Aristosseno, guided by a team of six teachers of different subjects.
The project, in fact, aims to join the scientific knowledge of cultivars present in the different territories of the Mediterranean basin, together with the historical-artistic knowledge, not forgetting the habits, customs and traditions linked to the use of fruits, legumes, vegetables, bushes, aromatic and medicinal plants in the food and wine, cosmetic and medical fields etc.
The project will create a web-site containing all the work made by students and it will obviously be an incentive to use foreign languages and above all English as the common language of exchange.
In particular, “the Project” – as pointed out by Prof. Salvatore Marzo, Headmaster of the Liceo Aristosseno “aims to consolidate a winning cultural model in the Mediterranean area which is strongly linked to the history, land, environment, art, food and wine in order to favour an aware and participated reading of the historical-cultural roots which are common to all the territories”
